"The separation of powers is never absolute and what we have done in Congress was part of the checks and balances in the government," said Quimbo, a practicing lawyer before joining Congress.
He pointed out that it is the chief justice alone who is facing impeachment and not the entire Supreme Court, so allegations of a supposed "direct assault" on the High Court have no basis.
"I challenge the IBP to show independence and be part of the reforms that we want to institute in the judiciary. Let us allow the Senate impeachment court to determine whether Chief Justice Corona is innocent or guilty," Quimbo said.
"The impeachment is against the Chief Justice who is accountable to the people and should not be construed as a direct assault to the Supreme Court," he also said.
