MANILA, Philippines — Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago, known for her feisty personality and quirky quotes, have made history by becoming the becoming the first woman from an Asian developing state to win a seat as a judge in the International Criminal Court (ICC).

“I confirm she (Santiago) won with 79 votes,” Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Raul Hernandez told the Manila Bulletin/Tempo on Tuesday morning.

Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago thanked President Benigno Aquino and foreign affairs officials for helping her elected as one of judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and said this is a victory for the Philippines in the international legal community.

“This is a victory for the Philippines in the international legal community. The tribute belongs to President Benigno Aquino, who nominated me; foreign affairs secretary Albert del Rosario, who maximized his unerring generalship over all Philippine posts abroad; foreign affairs undersecretary Rafael Seguis, who was the campaign manager; and most of all to Ambassador Libran Cabactulan, the Philippine Permanent Representative to the United Nations, who was the model diplomat in networking with the UN ambassadors. All members of the Philippine mission (embassy) in New York did splendid field work,” she said.
