MANILA - The Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) said the grant of bail to Senator Juan Ponce Enrile was a major setback in the people's battle for public accountability.

In a statement, FLAG condemned the decision of the Supreme Court to grant bail to Enrile, saying the decision mangles the Constitution to accommodate a rich and powerful man.


"The grant of bail to persons charged with plunder and other capital crimes has always been conditioned on the requirement that evidence of guilt is not strong. In case after case, our courts have consistently imposed this requirement. Until Enrile came along," said FLAG in a statement.

Meanwhile, the lawyer group lauded the dissenting opinion penned by SC Justice Marvic Leonen and concurred in by Chief Justice Lourdes Sereno, Justice Antonio Carpio and Justice Estela Perlas-Bernabe.
