In most courtroom thrillers of the past, there is a dramatic scene where the lead lawyer must wade through piles of documents stacked high to find the key piece of evidence that will win the case.
That type of discovery isn’t just in the movies. It is very much a part of the legal system, but now those reams of paper documents are being replaced by a flash drive or a computing cloud.
“Now you must tear through terabytes of information to find the needle in the haystack,” said Jeff Bennion, an attorney at Estey & Bomberger, LLP.
There is no doubt that the digital transformation of the legal profession is in full swing. Gartner, an industry research firm, has forecasted that the e-discovery software market will be worth $3.1 billion by 2018.
The growth of this market means there is increased demand for legal professionals who can properly identify, manage and analyze all forms of electronic legal data, Bennion said.
“Technology is advancing whether lawyers are adopting it or not,” he said. “These skills are in demand at small and large firms alike.”
