MANILA: The Supreme Court has affirmed with finality its rejection of a petition of a group of Filipino “comfort women” who demanded that the government seek an apology from Tokyo for their rape and abuses at the hands of the Japanese invaders during World War 11.

In addition to a formal apology, about 70 petitioners calling themselves the “Malaya Lolas” (Liberation Grandmothers), also sought monetary compensation from the Japanese government for the ordeal and sufferings they had suffered.

But in junking their motion for the SC to reconsider its decision for lack of merit, the tribunal declared: “It is not within our power to order the executive department to take up the petitioners’ case.”

Despite the adverse ruling, lawyers of the comfort women said they would elevate their case to the United Nations for the alleged violation of their human rights.

The lawyers pointed out the Philippines was a signatory to UN-sponsored international agreements on human rights and the protection of women and children.

The petitioners were among the estimated 200,000 women in the Philippines, Korea and China who were forced to serve as “sex slaves” of the Japanese imperial forces during World War 11.
