"The European Parliament is set to discuss a motion calling for a resolution from the transnational body to call for the immediate release of Senator Leila de Lima.

The European Parliament is the legislative body of the European Union.

Parliamentarians Barbara Lochbihler, Maria Heubuch, Heidi Hautala, Ernest Urtasun, Igor Soltes, Davor Skrlec Bronis Rope, and Bodil Valero filed a motion calling for a resolution from the European Parliament to decry the detention of De Lima.

De Lima's case will be included in the agenda of the European Parliament, which will also zero in on the breaches of human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.

Human Rights Watch Deputy Director for Asia Phelim Kine said the European Parliament will vote on De Lima's case Thursday.

In the motion, the proponents want the European Parliament to call for "the immediate release of Senator Leila M. de Lima of the Philippines and to provide her with adequate security whilst in detention."

The motion also "urges the Filipino authorities to drop all politically-motivated charges against her."

The European Parliament will also discuss the call for the Philippine government to "stop the political persecution of critics of the war on drugs."

The proponents of the motion also seek the condemnation of all acts of violence, intimidation, arbitrary detention and convictions against critics of the Philippine government.

Aside from calling for the release of De Lima, the motion also calls for a resolution condemning the extrajudicial killings in the Philippines and urging President Rodrigo Duterte to withdraw military forces in anti-drug operations.
